How to Calculate Framing Materials
Wall studs are typically spaced 16 inches on center for load-bearing walls or 24 inches for non-load-bearing. Divide the wall length (in inches) by the spacing to get the number of studs, then add one for the end. Add extra studs for door and window openings (king studs and trimmer studs).
Plates run the full length of the wall: one bottom plate and a double top plate (three total runs). Headers span openings and are typically doubled 2x10 or 2x12 lumber.
